Well we’ve all see the note when you log into Facebook – timeline is coming and it’s coming quickly. Time to migrate over, learn the ropes of the new layout, or get left in the dust. The good news is that although there seems to be quite a backlash the new timeline layout isn’t all that bad – there are a lot of possibilities with what you can do with the new layout and we’d like to share some of those with you now.
What’s pretty cool is the GIGANTIC banner across the top of your page that you can now customize. Nice for companies who want to do some branding and really “own” their page… also nice for individuals that have a serious photo library this is a great spot to feature some of your latest and greatest material. With this banner, it’ll be pretty easy to create a unique and eye-catching Timeline page design.
Another major change is how users will access custom Facebook tabs. See the arrows below, these point to the icons that will link to the new facebook tab pages:
Not a bad improvement in our opinion – but will certainly take some getting used to. Once you click on one of the tabs that will bring up a new page where you can view that content, versus the “old” way Facebook had it setup where the tab content would just populate in the same screen once the user clicked the tab name below the profile pic. Is this an improvement? Not sure about that we’d rather minimize the number of clicks the end-user makes but hey, who are we to judge 😉
Once you click on those thumbnails you are taken to the fan page’s tabs. Check out an example of a new Facebook timeline tab design:
Not bad- an improvement on size that’s for sure. You now have the option to design custom facebook tabs that can be the standard 520 pixels wide or now 810 pixels wide. Since these tabs are still using the iFrames to display the content, we are still able to design and build pretty much anything your heart desires since the page itself is actually living on your server somewhere (versus living on Facebook.com).
Overall we think these are some improvements, but of course it will take some time to get used to only to have Facebook change things once again. If you have any questions, or need help with your new Facebook timeline page design, give us a call at 1.800.889.9316 or email us at info@knockmedia.com.
