The rumors are swirling, the blogs are buzzing and Myspace has taken on the role of the old dog being brought behind the shed. Okay, maybe the dog thing was a bit harsh, but it’s no mystery, that the once king of social media has lost more than its share of thunder to Facebook, Twitter and other such outlets. Very recent rumors from industry insiders have the site closing its cyber doors as early as mid-week. Can it be true? And more importantly…does anyone care?

It seems over the past few years, Myspace has been much more of a reservation, where indy artists roam, hoping to catch the last bit of attention that stripped names like Sean Kingston, Lily Allen, and Colbie Caillet from their Myspace music players and reattached them to Billboard charts and Top 40 playlists all over the world.

We all remember being friends with Tom, right? You may also remember when it started taking just a couple extra seconds for one’s page to load….and that my (Myspace) friends, is when things started to go downhill. It has brought us scandals, cyber bullying, and of course…Tila Tequila! It has also brought us all together…together to reconnect once again and migrate to Facebook, to “like” statuses, tag photos, and get invites for events we could never geographically attend, yet I still reply “maybe”…just in case.

While putting this together, it only felt right to log in to my own account. If for nothing else, to see how it felt… flipping through messages, checking out pictures and the page comments of social media past. It was like wandering through an online land of the lost, a cyber graveyard frozen in time. Physically I hadn’t moved, but the sense of being alone in a closed mall was definitely there. It was interesting to see couples that have been married for 3 years with engaged as their relationship status, event flyers for venues that have not existed since 2008, and youthful profile pictures just left as the owner’s themselves begin to age. Maybe the description comes off a bit sadder than necessary…but you get the point.

Then again, this could just be the dawn to the greatest comeback of all time!!!  But, if you hold your breath, chances are you won’t be around to Tweet about it in the morning!
